Acetylsalicylic acid was first synthesized in 1853 by French chemist Charles Frederick Gerhardt. In making and studying the properties of various anhydrides, he mixed acetyl chloride with sodium salicylate, which reacted violently and melted and soon solidified.

 

In 1869, Schroeder, Prinzhorn, and Crout repeated gerhardt's (using salicylic acid) and Gilm's (using salicylic acid) synthesis methods, which proved that the two reaction products were identical - acetylsalicylic acid. For the first time, they identified the right structure for the product -- acetyl groups attached to phenolic oxygen. [162] In 1897 Bayer chemists modified salicin, a compound made by the plant Filipendula ulmaria, to produce a drug that was less stimulating to the digestive tract than pure salicylic acid. There is some debate about which chemist will lead the project. Bayer said the synthesis was done by Felix Hoffman, but later the Jewish chemist Arthur Eichengreen claimed he was the lead researcher, and his contributions were erased by the Nazi regime.
