Synonym: 1,2,3-Propanetriol, Glycerin
Colorless, transparent and sweet viscous liquid and belongs to organic. It can absorb moisture, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide and sulfur dioxide from the air. Large quantity may cause anesthesia. It is the framework component of triglyceride molecule.
Soluble in ethanol, immiscible with water, not soluble in chloroform, ether and carbon disulfide, benzene, oil. Can dissolve certain inorganic matter.
Main Functions
Glycerol is a lubricious laxative used in medicine to lubricate and stimulate the intestinal wall, soften the stool and make it easy to discharge
Additionally glycerine can be used at whole body filling water is moist, in the process of bath, will wash clean face, body, smear thick glycerine, let whole body absorb the moist air in the bathroom adequately, clean water is used after a few minutes, the meeting after bath feels whole body drank full water, the body is loosened, the skin is not dry.
Applications
Glycerol is an excellent hygroscopic agent, antifreeze agent, lubricant, solvent and auxiliary solvent, is an important raw material for the production of polyester, medicine, etc. Glycerine can also be used as a lubricant in food processing and packaging machinery; Nitroglycerine made from glycerine is used as raw material for explosives.
Glycerol is added to fresh cells from liquid or plate cultures and stored in the freezer. Fresh media cultures are inoculated by dipping into the frozen stock with a sterile loop or pipette.
Glycerol is used both in sample preparation and gel formation for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Glycerol is also used to aid in casting gradient gels and as a protein stabilizer and storage buffer component. It has been used in purification of bacteriophage particles by step gradients, calcium-phosphate-mediated transfection of eukaryotic cells with plasmid DNA, DEAE-dextranmediated transfection of DNA into cells, DNA sequencing reactions, and mediation of mispriming in PCR. The use of glycerol in improved focusing of alkaline pH protein samples in immobilized pH gradient (IPG) strips has been published. Studies of the effect of glycerol on separation of DNA fragments by capillary electrophoresis have been reported.
In addition, it is widely used in paper making, cosmetics, leather making, photography, printing, metal processing rubber, tobacco industry, ceramic industry, leather industry, wood industry and other industries.
