Carboxymethyl Chitin is an anionic polysaccharide and a chemical modification of chitin that provides an alternative to improve the biopolymer’s water solubility. The chemical structure of Carboxymethyl Chitin, a natural polymer, is very close to that of mucopolysaccharides (heparin and hyaluronic acid), whose biological tolerance has been demonstrated for a long time. In addition, it is an efficient trapper of heavy metals that are responsible for very many contact allergies; therefore it is really interesting for skin allergies. Carboxymethyl Chitin is a particularly effective hydrating agent. It has two advantages: it supplies water and it avoids dehydration to get better on gloss, stiffness and stickiness.
Carboxymethyl chitin (CM-chitin) was prepared at room temperature and characterized using ~1H NMR, FT1R and elemental analysis methods. The prepared CM-chitin was then used as a hydrophilic matrix for the preparation of the aspirin sustained release tablets via the wet granulation technique. The aspirin release profiles of the prepared tablets in a simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluid, respectively, were studied with the rotating-basket dissolution method. The results showed that the aspirin release rate in simulated gastric fluid was lower than that in simulated intestinal fluid. Thus, CM-chitin proved to be a pH-sensitive hydrophilic matrix.

The Chitin and the Chitosan have an excellent characteristic and are used in the medical care field and the functional food field. We are evaluating the application of the Chitin and the Chitosan to the cosmetics field. In this relation, we report on stability, compatibility, safety and availability (the moisturizing, the improvement of skin elasticity, the recovering from wrinkle, the prevention of the electrification and the improvement of the hair quality) in the cosmetics usage by use of the water-soluble carboxymethyl chitin.
